USA Time Standards

In each age group, there are several time standards to help place the swimmer with other swimmers of their ability level.  This way, when a beginning swimmer attends certain meets, they won’t have to swim against a swimmer who has been swimming for several years. These standards are as follows:

ABC Meets

District Meet

Junior Olympics

12 & under state meet

13 & over state meet

Zones
Short Course - Yards Short Course - Yards Short Course - Yards Short Course - Yards Short Course - Yards Times
Long Course - Meters     Long Course - Meters Long Course - Meters

Convert Long (Meters) to Short (Yards)

C:   The very bottom level.  Everyone starts here and has to work there way up to the next level.

B:  The middle level not quite the fastest kids, but not beginners anymore either.

A:  The upper level kids.  Almost to the state meet.

Q3: District Meet.  This meet is the first level in the Michigan Swimming Championship meet progression.

Q2: Junior Olympics.  The second level in the Michigan Swimming Championship meet progression. One level below the state championships.

Q1:  State level.  Swimmers with these times get to attend the Michigan Swimming State Swimming Championships.

AAAZone level.  These kids get to attend a meet every August with kids from several states competing for their state.

SECT: Sectionals : A meet where anyone in a geographic region can attend.  There are four meets each year across the country.

JO: Junior Nationals:  Anyone in the country under the age of 18 that is fast enough can attend.  This is the Under 18 USA national Championship.

SO:  Senior Nationals:  Anyone in the country that swims fast enough can attend.  This is the United States National Championship.

Michigan Swimming has posted all of these standards on their website along with lots of other swimming information.  When you get a chance, take a look at it.
