Swim Meets

There are three types of swim meets we attend each year, Dual, USA, and Championship.  Each is described in detail below.  Please read each description and if you have any questions, ask the coaches or one of the board members about them.  Meets are an essential part of swimming and one of the few ways the coaches have to gauge your child’s progress in the sport.  They are, also, extremely fun and a great way to spend time with your children and other swimmers.

 Dual Meets:

Dual Meets are usually held evenings and consist of a small, unscored meet between two or three teams from the surrounding area competing with each other. The coach will decide what events your swimmer will be entered in and signing up is as easy as writing your child’s name on a list on the wall.  These meets are a great opportunity for our swimmers to try new things and perfect old skills.  We encourage you to attend and help at as many of these as possible each season since they are a lot of fun and a great way for the coaches to gauge your child’s progress through the sport.  There is no extra cost to attend any of the dual meets.

USA Meets:

This meet type is a dual meet on a much larger scale.  USA Meets generally last all weekend (attendance isn’t required at all sessions) and are hosted by one club and attended by many clubs in the area.  These meets involve swimmers from all over Michigan, are not scored, but every Technical Rule is enforced.  Swimmers enter a meet by filling out a form indicating the events they will swim.  This is the next step in the development of your child’s swimming.  There are several types of these meets depending of the speed of the swimmers.  The levels are C for beginning swimmers, B for intermediate swimmers and A for advanced swimmers.  Often these meets are combined with several levels at the same meet (ex: AB, BC, or ABC.)  The coaches are more than willing to provide guidance as to which events the swimmer should enter. The cost to enter a USA Meet ranges from $3.50 to $5.00 per event.

Michigan Swimming Rules and Procedures

Each event has different "standards". If you have never swum a race, you have a C time. Once you swim a race and achieve a certain time, you can achieve a B time or an A time etc.

A meets are for swimmers who have achieved an A time in the events they wish to swim at that meet.

AB meets are for swimmers who have achieved B times or above in the events they wish to swim at that meet.

BC meets are for swimmers who have NOT achieved an A time in the events they wish to swim at that meet.

ABC meets are for EVERYBODY!

A copy of the time standards for each age group is included with the entry packet for each of these meets.  There is an extra fee for these types of events.  They are assessed per event entered by the swimmer.  Separate forms are available on the meet schedule page to sign up for these types of meets.

 Championship Meets:

Every year Michigan Swimming offers Several championship meets.   Each has different Qualification standards.

District Meet  is for any swimmer that has not achieved a Q2 Time

Junior Olympics is for swimmers that have achieved a Q2 Time but not a Q1 Time.

State Meets are for swimmers that have achieved a Q1 Time within the last year.

Zone Meets are for swimmers that have achieved an AAA Time within the last year.  This meet takes place at the end of summer and is a Long Course Meet
